The amount of times I get asked and emailed this question amazes me: Will your protein supplement help me gain weight and put on muscle?

So here are a couple of things I want you to consider before I answer this question.

1. Are you expecting to put on muscle from simply drinking a protein supplement? Or do you realise that a lot of hard work in the gym is necessary.

2. If you are training in a gym, is your weight training program constantly varied and you train your muscles to fatigue?

3. If so, are you allowing enough recovery time with the type of training you are doing? More does not necessarily mean better

I only highlight these points because because they can be easily overlooked. If you are trying to gain muscle and gain weight through diet, your training program is going to be a big part of your success.

In saying that, if you think drinking a protein supplement after a workout is going to do all this for you then think again. What is needed is good sound nutrition seven days a week. A bad diet isn’t going to help you gain weight. Not the kind of weight you want anyway! Which leads me to ask you the next question. Are you concerned about your overall health too? Yes I understand looking good and feeling strong is very important, but are you concerned if you are eating real foods or not?

The supplement industry is a landmine for when it comes to integrity and quality ingredients. Always check the ingredients and look to see if you recognise them. If you don’t, be wary as you are probably about to drink a chemical shit storm of a concoction. Sound healthy?

I personally CrossFit. I think their ethos around nutrition and exercise is second to none. A fine example of muscle and athleticism is CrossFit athlete Chad Mackay. He’s very diligent with his daily diet and eats real whole food.

So if you are looking to guzzle down a protein supplement after your next workout to gain weight with your diet, think about the following points I’ve highlighted in this post first.
