Living in Permanent Rush Hour? Steps I take to leave the 9-5 behind & do what I love

“The harder I prepare, the luckier I seem to get.” – Michael Jordan

It’s 5am, I’m jet-lagged and I’ve just spent the last half hour answering emails, going over stock and now I’m writing a blog post. My eyeballs are so red I think they just might explode! Why am I doing this? Because I love it!

I’m feeling in a slightly reflective mood as another year almost comes to an end. Due to a few personal circumstances (which has really hammered home to me that we should be making the most of it – life), I felt it was a good time to share with you the steps that I take and continue to take as I move towards one of the values that I defend to the end – Do what you love. And the great thing about this is that it far outweighs any moniterial value, it just so happens if you have the courage to follow through, the money begins to turn up and you  earn a living by doing the stuff you love best.

If somebody had said to me two years ago that I would be able to run my own company from anywhere in the world, I would have questioned their IQ!

Intention is everything. Failure doesn’t matter.

Are you living your daily passions  or are you just working in a job you could easily give up tomorrow? When we stop to look at something we want to achieve, the task can seem mammoth on times and we end up not taking any action at all.

I find if I chunk it right down and bring it back to the present moment, then ask myself what can I do right now in this very second that can take me a step closer, this can help give me clarity. But the most important thing of all is that I then act upon it in that very moment (super important). By doing this I’m giving the thought – idea – dream (or whatever it is) my intention that I want to move forward with this. The result will take care of itself. But it’s the intention that’s important.

A few years ago 180 Nutrition was simply a seed of a thought. I was frustrated as I felt I could solve a problem and a small piece of the puzzle when it came to improving health and protein powders, but when I looked at the task at hand it was enough to make my head spin off!

At this point I either remained paralised or I just start anyway… And that’s what I did, one step at a time. I began to build my first website and I had zero internet experience, and do you know what the end result was like for my first website? A dogs breakfast that’s what!

Success is the result of good judgment

Good judgment is the result of experience

Experience is often the result of bad judgment

Not only that, it took me months! But I didn’t care, all I really cared about was the fact that I was putting my whole focus on this, my ‘intention’ and I truly believed the rest would take care of itself. And it did… big time! As long as I was amongst it giving it my all, I found doors where opening for me… the right people, timing of events, situations and circumstances.. I found things where more often than not  beginning to go my way.

So my dogs breakfast of a website actually got the ball rolling, simply because I started to act upon what I truly wanted, dropped the bullshit hurdles in my mind, and every day began to give it my ‘intention’. Now I’m part of a thriving company and a website I’m very proud of.

Simply start! No matter how small just start and the result will take of itself. If you put ALL your energy, drive and focus into this, you will be amazed at what you can achieve over time!

So what about you? Are you wishing your week away so you can take refuge from your job on the weekend? Or do you get up on a Monday morning and it feels good like every other day because you are doing what you love?

I appreciate romance doesn’t bloom overnight. To achieve any dream or goal it takes daily progress, to ‘train the brain’ if you like, just like going to the gym. So this is what I do most days:

  • I find a peaceful spot & sit quietly for a few minutes & think about my goals and where I can direct my ‘intention’
  • I then imagine I’ve already achieved them and feel fulfilled

This may sound like airy fairy stuff, but make no mistake you will have challenges every day as you set out to do what you love. I find I need all the help I can get to keep me from straying, and I’ve found this truly works for me. Just remember, whatever you think about most you’ll experience.

But the problem early on in my new adventure was this – self doubt. It was as if some voice would kick in and start laughing at you because you have grand plans to make great big changes. The reality is though it’s just a thought like any other. By taking the above steps it would help me become more present and aware of the thoughts that empowered me or held me back. And daily I make sure I focus all my energy on the ones that empower me.

I ask myself this when in doubt:

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Seriously give this some thought. If you were absolutely certain of success, what would you do differently?

If you are like me, you’ll look at failure or getting it wrong as simply a learning experience and move on. If you are failing it means you are taking action, which means you are giving it your ‘intention’.

Then I ask myself this – What’s the worst that can happen? Is it really going to bother me 1 year from now? If it doesn’t work out, what can I learn from this to keep me moving forward?

As another year rolls on, is there anything you want to change? Challenge? Are you doing what you love?

I so love what you wrote here, Guy! It is so very true and I am exactly on that path .. I do what I love doing every day and it is an awesome feeling (of course I have my ‘off days” but keeping the goal in mind like you have already achieved it, trying to find time to reflect and meditate , pushes me out of that mode then). The only time I get a little frustrated is when people close to me are trying to put their negativity on me, trying to stop me in my tracks. Don’t they know that there’s no stopping me ;)..lol.
Have a fantastic 2012 – keep up the great work!

Thanks Gaby! It’s great to hear that others feel the same way too 🙂 I really think it’s so important yet easily over looked by many. What I’ve also found is the more momentum you get, the more the negativity drops away. Surronding myself with like minded people has been a big part of it for me, and also people who are already doing it.
May 2012 be our best year yet! G

Great post… I’m right behind you! I’m 60 and just recently had an epiphany which showed me my true purpose in life.

Yes, I can relate to doing what you love, until your eyes almost bleeding, because you love it. It’s like having a really good type of OCD.

Have you heard of a Dr. Terry Wahls, who’s in the US, evidently had MS pretty bad, and cured it with food! She did a TED talk, so you can find her engaging story there.

I have just started eating better as well. Today I had a decent sized piece of liver, fried in extra-virgin olive oil, and a veggie omelet. I take a good multi and 2 gr of fish oil that contains 1300mg of EPA. No wheat or dairy. Still struggling with chocolate.

Down side is I’m ADHD, and recovering from a 4+ yr bout of chronic depression and anxiety. This has left me 30lbs (US) over weight, with a BMI of 31 (officially obese) which shows in my mid section. Oh, basically unemployable – or at maybe I should say ageism is quite prevalent in the US.

The up side is like you, I have immersed myself in Positive Psych, reading Barbara Fredrickson, Dr. Siegel, Dr. Rick Hanson, Dr Ed Diener, and others. Sooooo much to learn.

Oh, finally, my mission is to help millions to enhance their thinking process using psych, but distilling it to a point where they won’t fell like they’re being psych’d. Like slowly raising the water level around their boat until it floats. There’s more, but that’s what a Smiling Mind is about.

I very happy you found me on Twitter. Thanks for reaching out!

Hey Gary, thanks for dropping by! I’ll check out Dr. Terry Wahls as I’m a big fan of Ted Talks (who isn’t!). Glad you are rolling with your new found journey! There’s nothing better!
