Guy: Hi this is Guy from 180 Nutrition and first of all I would just like to wish you a happy new year. Hope you had a very good festive season and some time off.

Now, I’ll keep this as short as possible. I was just chatting to Stu and we decided to just for a bit of fun is great what we’ve called ‘The Year Of Great Health’. Each month we are going to be delving into a particular topic that we find is going to be beneficial to us and our health, and of course share it with you guys as well.

For January we’ve decided to kick off with the month of the gut. Now when I say gut I’m not talking about a beer gut, but actually our intestinal tract. I think the importance of this is severely overlooked. For anyone that’s starting the new year with maybe a detox or a weight loss plan, or getting a PT (personal trainer) and going to the gym, or whatever it maybe for your new years resolutions, if you are overlooking the gut then I honestly think you will be actually making a bit of a mistake.

When you consider as well how much we indulge over the Christmas period in alcohol and cake and things like that. Soft drinks as well. When it comes to gut health, two of the major players are sugar which absolutely destroys gut health and aspartame (artificial sweetener), which generally turns up in most diet things. That absolutely is my concern and two things you seriously want to avoid if you are wanting to improve your health for this year.

The importance of the gut I really can’t stress enough. For instance, if you are going to start your weight loss plan did you know there are now studies showing if your gut health is out of whack then it will make you trying to lose weight a lot more difficult. Or if you are going to just detoxify the liver and your gut health is out, you could actually end up doing more harm than good over the long term. These things are overlooked and these are the things we want to cover.

With myself recently, I cut my knee open and ended up doing to courses of antibiotics. I didn’t listen to the doctor when he said rest, as I kept training crossfit. And the antibiotics are tearing my gut health apart basically. Also as I was just getting over that, I cut my elbow open and that got infected while I was surfing, which was actually quite serious and I’m still on antibiotics. So that’s another reason why I want to be proactive, and as soon as I get off the antibiotics the first thing I am going to do is get my gut health checked.

I encourage you to at least go out and get your gut tested, it’s not that expensive. A good naturopath would be able to do that for you and advise you from there. I’ve also listed a heap of links on past posts which I encourage you to check out and also if you’ve got any sort of great fermented foods, or any knowledge you would like to share with us, please let us know through FaceBook, the blog or email and then we can share it with others as well, especially if they are good blog posts and things like that, we’d love to hear from you.

So over the next month I just wanted to cover this topic and say G’day basically.

To a year of great health and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Any thoughts on constipation? It’s all linked…

180nps says:

There are multiply reasons why one would could have constipation, so proper diagnosis would be needed. There is a fantastic chapter on digestion & nutrition in this book Primal Body, Primal Mind..

Hope that helps, Guy

Jessica says:

Thanks – I actually have that book on my bedside table waiting to be read, so will move it to the top of the pile..
