180 Nutrition: There are a few different instructions when it comes to drinking lemon water. Some say to be careful of the enamel on your teeth and advise not to brush your teeth straight afterwards; some say to use a straw to drink it and rinse your mouth out straight afterwards, while others prefer to add lemon essential oil to water rather than using the juice of the fruit itself.

What nobody disagrees on however is that lemons are a nutritional powerhouse and are nature’s very own superfood packed with vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and B-vitamins and are extremely high in anti-oxidants. It’s because of the high nutritional value of our favourite citrus fruit that drinking lemon water every day is not just a good idea, but it comes highly recommended.
I like to start the day with the juice of a quarter of a lemon and half a glass of lukewarm water, but that’s all down to personal taste and routine. If you’re not sure if starting your day with a sour liquid is for you, here are nine excellent reasons that when life gives you lemons – you make a daily glass of lemon water.

1) Lemon water helps digestion

Lemon juice is a similar make up to saliva which helps the liver to produce bile which flushes unwanted toxins out of the body through the digestive process. After just a few days of drinking a daily glass of lemon water, you’ll find yourself feeling lighter, less bloated and notice a reduction in excess gas.

2) Lemon water supports your immune system

Lemons are packed full of vitamin C which supports a healthy immune system. Because the body doesn’t produce Vitamin C by itself, it’s vital that you get enough through your diet and lemon juice gives you a big hit in just one glass. Lemon water also reduces the acidity in your body which decreases your susceptibility to colds, flu and other nasty germs which you’re exposed to daily.

3) Lemon water helps you lose weight

Lemons are full of pectin which is an ingredient that helps you feel full for longer. Drinking a glass of lemon water each morning will reduce your appetite leaving you less likely to make poor food choices throughout the day.

4) Lemon water promotes a healthy heart

Lemons are full of potassium which contributes to a healthy heart. A glass of lemon water each day also supports the functions of both the brain and the nervous system.

5) Lemon water increases your energy levels

Lemons hold negatively charged ions which, in a nutshell, means they are electrically active! When the lemon juice hits your stomach, the electrical activity gives your brain and body a boost that no other food on the planet can.

6) Lemon water helps to detox

The citric acid in lemons helps to remove unwanted toxins from the body by stimulating natural enzymes made in the liver. Lemon water also increases urination meaning that unwanted toxins are flushed out sooner.

7) Lemon water gives you healthy skin

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which tightens skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The alkaline also kills bacteria which are commonly associated with acne and facial blemishes. While you can put lemon juice directly onto facial blemishes, drinking lemon water also purifies the blood which is known to affect skin imperfections.

8) Lemon water balances PH levels in the body

Illness occurs when there’s too much acidity in the body. Once inside the body, lemons are the most alkaline food on the planet so regular consumption balances PH levels in the blood to reduce your risk of illness and disease.

9) Lemon water freshens your breath

Lemons help to kill the bacteria which gives you the dreaded morning breath. Be aware that brushing your teeth straight after a glass of lemon water can potentially damage the enamel on your teeth, so it’s advisable to brush your teeth before drinking lemon water or drink it through a straw.
Lemons are one of the most nutritionally dense fruits available and squeezing a few drops into water each day allows you to get all the benefits without the sour taste. If you don’t already have a glass of lemon water in your routine, what are you waiting for?
