Not something you see every day

Altitude training.By Guy Lawrence

There are many different reasons that can make ones head turn whilst walking through a gym (that’s as far as I’ll go with that statement). One of the most memorable times for me was seeing someone walking on the treadmill eating an ice cream watching opera.

But Ed (pictured left) was getting more looks than I do when walking through Sydney’s Central Station with my Vibram shoes on.

Like any curious blogger, I had to confirm the method in the madness. Ed was kind enough to chat and allow me to snap a couple of pics and explain his thinking.

So why?

You could let the imagination run a little with this one and Ed’s reasoning. But it turns out that it’s oxygen restriction. Basically gas mask training mimics the affect of high altitude training.

Here are some of Ed’s reasons for training with the gas mask on:

  • Increases in lung capacity also results from GMT as your lungs have to work 10 times harder to get the oxygen in
  • Increases anaerobic thresholds
  • Gas exchange becomes more efficient
  • Energy production levels rise
  • Mental and physical stamina increase
  • Mental focus improves

If you like the idea of running through the streets with a gas mask on or you are concerned you have a face for radio, you can learn more about it here.
