I believe one of the most fundamental things you can do to improve your health is kick the sugar along with processed carbs. But naturally one of the side effects are sugar cravings. Hence the sugar craving carb monster!

In this video, I talk about a few simple steps I’m taking with my mum around her meal times and our breakfast smoothie to help beat those sugar cravings.

In the video

  • Supressing those sugar cravings with fats & L-Glutamine Powder
  • A simple way to make the perfect breakfast smoothie
  • The key to blood sugar & weight loss

What we use

  • 180 Natural Protein SuperFood (Australia only)
  • Fish oil & cod liver oil
  • L-Glutamine powder – Awesome for beating sugar cravings
  • Coconut oil – Add to smoothies or eat raw by the teaspoon
  • Sarah Wilsons eBook: I Quit Sugar

Hi! This is Guy Lawrence of 180 Nutrition, and I’m back in my parents house in Wales. My mum’s decided to basically embrace a healthier lifestyle, with weight loss and improving her overall health as her main motivators.

Now, the first thing I’m looking at is how can we basically get her off sugar, processed carbohydrates and guide her to eat more unprocessed meals. The reason for this is that we need to keep her blood sugar levels in check for the very fact that we want her to burn body fat, and I have her doing some gentle exercises every morning as well.

The reality is, if you are going to have high blood sugar you are never going to be able to access any body fat. So you have to keep your blood sugar levels steady.

Now the problem my mum is having is, once you remove carbohydrates, processed carbohydrates and sugar you get cravings. The only carbohydrates she’s eating at the moment are vegetables.

What I’m doing to help reduce her cravings is the introduction of fish oil in the mornings and cod liver oil which are fantastic fatty acids, but these do actually calm carbohydrate and sugar cravings. Along with that I’ve introduced L-Glutamine. L-Glutamine Powder is an amino acid and my mum will be taking this on a empty stomach before her meals and breakfast smoothie. This will provide instant relief from sugar cravings… That’s a really good tip.

Along with that she will be getting 180 protein powder blended as a breakfast smoothie, naturally of course. So just a little bit of milk as she’s still taking some milk at the moment, and what I’m doing is putting two dessert spoons, which are fairly reasonable in size. Now the good thing about 180 protein is the fact that it contains fibre which will help stabilise blood sugar, but it also includes a Vitamin B complex from the inactive brewers yeast and that actually helps metabolise carbohydrates as well.

The other thing that I am doing is using organic cold pressed coconut oil, this stuff is fantastic. It will also reduce any sugar cravings. I’m just putting a large tea spoon in the breakfast smoothie as well, and that will also keep her feeling fuller for longer. Coconut oil (I suggest you look it up) because it’s got heaps of fantastic properties including the ability to help candida as well. Candida of course we know is a main contributor for carbohydrate and sugar cravings as that’s where it derives it’s energy from.

Now the one thing I have been really impressed with is the Magic Bullet. My mum’s got one but I haven’t, but I will be getting one as soon as I get back to Australia because they are so simple. Literally just screw that top on and pop it in there. Quick whiz then unscrew it, and if you are fussy you can put one of these tops on. That’s literally my mums kick-start to the day which we are finding is helping a lot. And um yeah.. see how you go.

Just interested to know about fish oil supplements. I used to take the Bioceuticals brand Ultraclean EPA/DHA fish oil capsules. I know fish oil supps are good for me ….I just forget to take them sometimes. Have heard before about how good Cod Liver Oil is for health but you mention in your video about taking both CLO and Fish oil….is that right? Do you recommend taking both types. Will be ordering some more 180 tomorrow so it’s ready for when I get back home to Melbourne. Having struggled a bit over the holidays keeping away from the sugar stuff so looking forward to getting back on the right path to health.

Yeah, I take both and have got my mum doing the same. I look at Cod Liver Oil more so as being a very good vitamin A & D provider and I buy mine fermented. I’m also a big fan of Krill oil as a high grade fish oil supplement. Personally I think you can’t go wrong with these.

Hope that helps 🙂

Is there any different between L-Glutamine and Glutamine? Thanks.

Hi Yohana…To my knowledge, no.
